Tuberculosis (TB) screening is a crucial step in the medical examination required for US immigration. If your TB test comes back positive, additional steps are necessary to ensure compliance with immigration health requirements. At Arena Medical Group, Dr. Arena and his team provide comprehensive TB testing and follow-up care to help you navigate this process smoothly.

TB Blood Test for US Immigration

At Arena Medical Group, we offer QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus, a blood test required by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for TB screening. This test is preferred over the traditional skin test because it provides more accurate results and requires only one visit.

What Happens if Your TB Test is Positive?

A positive TB blood test does not necessarily mean you have an active infection. However, it does indicate that you have been exposed to TB bacteria at some point. If your test is positive, the next step is a chest X-ray to check for any signs of active tuberculosis in the lungs.

Chest X-Ray Requirement

If your blood test is positive, our team will refer you for a chest X-ray to determine whether there is an active infection. This step is mandatory to complete the immigration medical exam process.

  • If the X-ray is normal – You likely have a latent TB infection, meaning the bacteria are present but inactive and not contagious. You may still be advised to take preventive treatment.
  • If the X-ray shows abnormalities – Further evaluation and possible treatment are required before you can proceed with your immigration application.

Treatment for Active TB

If you are diagnosed with active TB, you must complete treatment before proceeding with the immigration process. This treatment typically involves antibiotics for several months and regular follow-ups to ensure the infection is completely eradicated.
